Medical Student Committee UpdateDecember 2021
The Texas College of Emergency Physicians Medical Student Committee has worked to re-invent medical education and engagement during the pandemic. Adapting to this age of virtual meetings, conferences, and interviews has allowed the MSC to broaden its reach of impact and come together as a group to creatively overcome the challenges that it imposes. While we are looking forward toward this year’s in person TCEP Re-CONNECT 2022 conference with immense excitement, it is important for us to celebrate the resilience of our members over the past 2 years by reflecting on the success of our events and the accomplishments of the Emergency Medicine Interest Groups from across the state of Texas. Some of our noteworthy events include our Meet the Program Series, TCEP MSC Colloquium, and incredible speakers. For the Meet the Program Series, the Medical Student Committee where students from all over the state could attend meetings via Zoom to learn more about the amazing Texas residency programs. Each program has their own individual meeting to maximize student exposure to programs and the opportunity to network at any level of their medical school training. The TCEP MSC Colloquium is a multi-day event spearheaded by our very own Project Coordinator, Louisa Weindruch, that included several speakers, a program director panel moderated by Dr. Hilary Fairbrother and Dr. Scott Wieters, and a residency speed dating event. Speakers covered important events such as: “Top 3 Qualities of a Student Who Honors a Clerkship”, “Getting into Residency”, and “EM Physicians Avoiding Burnout”. There were also specific talks covering the importance and practice of POCUS and Simulation. We also hold meetings with Emergency Medicine Interest Groups (EMIG) for opportunities to discuss and brainstorm campus and community outreach events, connect them with resources, and maintain open lines of communication. In conjunction with these meetings we have had the opportunity to host incredible speakers discussing different facets of emergency medicine. Recently we had the opportunity to have Dr. IV Mirus, EM physician at UT Southwestern medical center, come speak to the TCEP MSC about advocacy and barriers to healthcare of the Deaf community. This Spring, we look forward to seeing the incredible impact medical students across the state will have on community members through the outreach initiatives that are overseen by TCEP. Two Step demonstrates hands-only CPR and Lone Star Survival teaches basic bleeding control techniques, both of which could help train participants how to potentially save a life. The TCEP MSC is fortunate to work with some of the most intelligent, motivated, driven students across the state! This month’s EMIG Spotlight goes to: the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston, Texas! We are so proud of all of the hard work their leadership has put into organizing events! Some of these include: the UTMB Amazing Race for MS1’s, a UTMB exclusive Texas EM Residency program director panel, Feed Galveston Service (50k meals put together and distributed to local food pantries), virtual simulation sessions, speakers, shadowing shifts, and so much more! Congratulations on all that you have accomplished this year, we look forward to seeing everything you continue to do for your members and community. |
