Immediate Past President's Message

April 2023

Sterling Overstreet, MD, FACEP
TCEP Immediate Past President

I would like to thank everyone who was able to attend Connect in Austin for our first ever conference in conjunction with a Legislative Day. With the session in full swing, this was meant to provide the opportunity to meet with our legislators at the state capitol. Connect was well attended and it was great to see everyone who did join us.

As we look forward to next year, we will transition back to meeting at a resort for TCEP’s 50th Anniversary at Margaritaville on Lake Conroe April 19-21th , 2024 and hope that you can join us. This will be a great venue to celebrate 50 years of our organization and spend time with friends and colleagues.

TCEP and Imperium are actively engaged in the legislature and the Leadership and Advocacy Council meets frequently to review bills we are tracking. We are working hard to advance our priorities and mitigate threats to our practice at the capitol. An update on the recent bills is provided in this newsletter. Please pay attention to our engagED platform as any urgent call to action messaging will be sent out by Beth Brooks via this platform.

As the gavel has now passed to our new President Dr. Sandra Williams this is my last EMphasis article. I want to take a moment to thank the college for the opportunity and great responsibility to lead this group. Several years ago, when I decided to run for the candidate member of the board, I never would have guessed that my journey with TCEP would lead to this point. Over the last decade you have given me the opportunity to spend time working with a group of colleagues from around the state and nation to better our specialty. Thank you to an engaged and active board that always brought their best ideas and guidance to the board meetings. The importance of a strong board of directors cannot be emphasized enough and I truly benefited from this. I would also like to recognize Beth Brooks, CAE, and her invaluable role in this organization for the last six years. As many of you know, Beth has announced her retirement later this year and we have started the process of recruiting and hiring a new Executive Director with the help of our search committee members.

As we look forward to our next Board meeting in Houston, July 13-14, I want to encourage you to let us know if you can attend and participate in our open meeting. The board is always receptive to input from our members at meetings and many leaders of the college got their start by just showing up.

Thank you all for a great year!
