Medical Student Committee Update

June 2023

Chair

The TCEP Medical Student Committee (MSC) wants to congratulate all the graduating medical students entering emergency medicine residency in the state of Texas. The MSC is lucky to be a part of your journey, and hope that you stay involved through residency! I believe the future of emergency medicine is bright in Texas.

As this year’s Chairman, I want to thank the outgoing members of the 2022-2023 MSC. The MSC had a productive year. Just to name a few accomplishments:
• Last August, we hosted the 2nd annual Medical Student Colloquium. Speakers included Dr. Gillian Schmitz (ACEP President), faculty at John Peter Smith including Dr. Mason and Dr. Scarborough, faculty at Brooke Army Medical Center and Baylor College of Medicine.
• In addition, the MSC provided the opportunity for fourth year students to “Meet the Programs” with virtual meet and greets with EM residency programs across the state.
• The MSC also planned monthly advocacy meetings, with discussions ranging from involuntary hospitalizations to psychiatric emergencies.

Finally, this spring the MSC planned incredible medical student programming at TCEP Connect in Austin. There was a line-up of lecturers that covered topics for audition rotations, applying to EM, and how to get involved early in medical school. Then, we asked the program directors tough questions in the PD panel, with subsequent residency speed dating. In the afternoon, medical students participated in MedGames with ultrasound being performed blindfolded and medical charades. It was a time for learning and a lot of laughs!

A few medical students participated in the legislative day, where we went to the state capitol to meet with our representatives in both the house and congress. It has been a busy legislative session, and it was exciting to advocate on behalf of TCEP.

Looking forward to this upcoming academic year, I want the MSC to be a resource for medical students. I encourage all medical students, from MS1 to MS4, to get involved with the MSC. Attend the virtual symposium this fall – it’s free! Present a topic to our advocacy committee. I even encourage medical students to write an article for the newsletter. TCEP offers incredible mentorship and leadership opportunities. If you have any questions about the MSC or just want to chat about the future of EM, I am happy to talk one-on-one!
